Here is the latest update:

There is a small storm moving into the Pacific NW today with a wet front moving south through Mono County tonight into Wednesday AM. The snow level during the wetter portion will be about 8500 feet. So not expecting a lot of sticking snowfall in the Town of Mammoth especially eastern portions. About 4 inches of snow is possible over upper elevations tonight through Wednesday.  The snow level will come down Wednesday but most of the snowfall will be over Wednesday. Thursday looks dry.

The big attention comes with the big storm Friday night with a series of systems into early next week.   Several feet of snow is possible on Mammmoth Mt this weekend into early next week. The snow level now is diffacult to nail down. However…. it shoud be all snowfall on Mammoth Mt and amounts will be in the feet by weeks end.  Amounts in town will have to get closer, time wise for a better handel on it.

If all goes well, this will be the 1st great pattern for precip, associated with El Nino this winter. It is still 3 to 4 days away, so hang in there and see if it all holds together…

Although the flow is NWesterly, The models are still going for it with very cold temps and about a foot of snow over the Mammoth Crest and 4 to 7 inches in town.  Lets keep our fingers crossed it comes true for Today into Thursday AM.

The weekend  is milder with some showers possibly Saturday.

Snowfall amounts are now realistic compared to earlier forecasts. NW flows are much dryer compared to storms that are westerly or Southwesterly. This storm with a NW flow will bring cold and some 2 to 7 inches of snow over the higher elevations above 7000 feet Wednesday into early Thursday AM.  Expect Lower elevations, in the 1 to 4 inche range below 7000 feet.  The weather system for Saturday looks weaker. Just a few snow showers? Check back this Thursday  for the weekend to double check, as it may bring some snowshowers, rain or sun!

This is El Nino.

Storm looking good today and tonight even through its a NW slider. 8 to 16 inches of snow over the upper elevations of the Sierra with lesser amounts in town mainly because how the water/temp is set up.   Improving weather expected during the afternoon Sunday and dry weather and continued cold early next week. It will be dry Monday and Tuesday with a cold storm Wednesday into Thursday. A break possible Friday next week with ano system that weekend.

All signels positive for a moderate storm Saturday and night. Pleanty of cold air and wind with it.

Another system will bring light to moderate amounts mid week next week.

Of further interest is a change in the pattern coming up mid month. It has a Pinnapple connection with a pattern associated with strong SW flow. It this does develop it would be classic for the high country. Well see how it all, and if it comes together.

This Winter is a rough one for the weatherman. I see so many differences in the both the model runs and models. So anyone that is planning a trip to the mountains, plan on lots of changes from medium or even short ranges forecasts before traveling. Once we get a decent snowpack, it won’t be as important.

At the moment, the Reno forecast office is calling for a Winter Storm Watch:

This suggests at least a foot of snow for the high country Saturday night into Sunday. 8 to 16 inches is being advertized above 7000 this weekend.

Looking at the models, there is a strong NW flow with this precip forecast; “Very Unusual” for a pattern that is expecting over a foot. However, it will be plenty cold out their, so well see.

Next decient storm begins the middle of next week that is following by a larger other, but dont go to the bank yet on it, until were very close in time.
