Platinum Powder Watch for Sunday

WINTER STORM WARNING EARLY SATURDAY AM THROUGH 400AM MONDAY.

Cold Pacific storm to bring 3.5 to potentially 5 feet over upper elevations Saturday and Sunday, lingering through Monday..Travel through the Sierra Saturday afternoon to become treacherous through Sunday night.

This storm will be the largest so far this season. Because of the very cold nature of the storm, “Platinum Powder” watches are in effect for Sunday as temperatures -6C to -8C at 10000 feet are expected. Snow to water ratios of 15/1 to 20/1 are expected Sunday.  Avalanche danger will be increasing in non controlled areas this weekend.  Stay Safe. Think snow safety.

More later…….

_________________________________________
This past weekend storm brought wet snow…light rain/snow mix to the lower elevations of town Saturday afternoon, then cold dry powder this morning. Amounts over the upper elevations were all in the form of snow through the event with estimated amounts of over 3 feet at this time over the crest and in the upper elevation bowls…The lower end of what was forecasted.

The weather system and pattern is ushering in colder temps today with highs in Mammoth confined to the upper 20 and low 30s, Tuesday through Friday.

Expect the remains of this system to exit by late Tuesday Night/Wednesday AM with a fair Wednesday with Thursday showing more clouds and increasing breezes over the upper elevations!

Our global models the GFS and Europian are handeling the Weekend Storm differently. The GFS has two significant impulses affecting the Sierra. The first will bring at least light snowfall. The second impulse seems to be digging further west and so it has the potential to be wetter.  However!! The new 12Z ECMWF has the systems more NW Slider type storms with much ess moisture for our area! The ECMWF also keeps the polar jet axis more to the north of us with the Friday night through Sunday night portion, potentially very windy! So the jury is definetly out for the weekend storm as far as snowfall amounts and wind for Mammoth!!
